Thanks to all of you who posted three ways you are an eco-fairy. This contest is now CLOSED. The drawing for the recycled Tee-Bag will be held on May 1st after Miss Fi gets home from school. She will pull the winner’s name out of a bowl and I will contact the winner via email. I will also post their name on this blog.

Here at Miss Fi’s Kingdom I want to encourage everyone to wave his or her Eco- Fairy Freak Flag high. So in honor of Earth Day 2009 I’m holding a contest. One lucky winner will get a Stitch of Grace recycled T-Shirt, Tee-Bag!

All you have to do is share at least three ways you’re an Eco-Fairy. Write them in the comment section of the Miss Fi’s Kingdom Blog (sorry, emailing me doesn’t count ☺). Do you recycle, compost, shop at thrift stores, use compact florescent light bulbs, or buy organic? You can also let us know how you plan to be even greener in the near future. Do you have plans to get rid of your grass? Are you going to start to buy greener products? Going solar anybody? The point is I want you to share how you’re making a difference big or small.

Everyone who leaves a comment will be entered into a drawing for the Tee-Bag. Only one entry per person, please. The contest will end April 30, 2009. Miss Fi will select the winner by pulling a name out of a hat on May 1, 2009. I will notify the winner by email and post the results on Miss Fi’s Kingdom Blog. Big or small all our collective efforts will make a difference.

    1. I use Freecycle to get rid of things that I no longer need but are still usable.
    2. I use home made shopping bags to bring groceries home. (Made out of old jeans or left over fabric from quilting)
    3. I make small bags out of netting to put my produce in at the grocery store. They weigh amost nothing and can be taken to the store in your shopping bag (see item 2). I haven’t had a grocery clerk complain yet.

    1) I recycle more than I trash. I ALWAYS recycle my paper, plastic, glass and aluminum for money; other recyclables are returned via the city’s recycle program (even the toilet paper rolls!) .
    2) My landscaping has been replenished with water-wise or distressed plants from commercial entities; plants are rehabilitated and given as a blessing or gift to a friend, business, or shelter that I support. When a plant is no longer suitable for me, I give it away to someone who can appreciate it.
    3) Most of my shopping is completed at thrift stores, or otherwise recycled items stores, and Trader Joe’s who purchases from many organic/small business owners who produce items in a safe and sane, most times organic, environment and they limit packaging for their private label items for sale.
    4) All items I, or my friends and family, no longer need are donated to the Viet Nam Veterans’ Thrift Store, local women’s shelters or the San Bernardino City Mission (keep it local).
    5) I sweep down sidewalks or driveway rather than hosing down with water.

Even though our trash service does not have recycling we have bins for plastic, glass and cans. Our newspaper man recycles our old newspapers.
As often as we can we use cloth bags when we shop.
We take extra pastic bags to the recycling bin at the store.
All of our old clothing and other items we no longer need go to Lighthouse of the Blind.
Lights are turned off when we leave the room.
I recycle old cards for scrapbooking.

We purchase as many organic goods as possible
We separate out and recycle our cans, glass, paper, and metal
    We compost our green waste
Jessica is an ecofairy; so I have a competitive recycling/reusing advantage.

My city recycles, as most do in the Bay Area. So we get to recycle most glass, plastic and metal. Though I am a bit peeved at the large number of items I can’t put in the recycling bin. My city picks up trash every week and recyclables and then yard waste on alternating weeks. I only take out my trash every other week. The recycle bins are always full.

We use our own bags as often as possible when shopping. I still have a hard time remembering to take bags when doing non-grocery shopping, but I am getting better. Most times I ask them not to bag items if I can manage to carry them. I have yet to bring my own doggy bag containers when eating out, but I do plan on trying it soon.

I try to walk to the grocery store (2 blocks), but I have to drive by it on the way home, so I usually just stop in, but I guess that is combining trips, so that is sort of green.

We take our unused but usable items to Goodwill (3 blocks away). We do browse the Goodwill selection before we by something somewhere else.

I bought a “Kill-a-Watt” and a “Watts Up?” power meters to judge and minimize my vampire (stand-by mode) power consumption.

I never leave my computer running for no reason.

Most of my lights are CFL, but I’d rather they were LED. I’m still waiting to find a good LED replacement light.

I installed a programmable thermostat in my apartment. I keep telling my fiancee she has to put on a sweater before she can turn the heat up.

I put “shoe goo” on my climbing shoes when they wear through.

I wash zip lock bags and reuse them.

I bought and use rechargeable NiMH battieries when ever possible. Smoke detectors can’t use them, bummer.

    We don’t buy paper towels.

I’m looking into getting a electric assist bicycle to ride to work. I still haven’t thought up a way to convince my boss that telecommuting is a good idea. My commute is not that long (6 miles).

    I guess that is it.

I now it’s a little late, but my mom and I bought rock tumblers this summer (not the kids kind, but more of a heavy duty kind). We break old wine bottles into small pieces with a hammer, then put the pieces in the tumbler. After about 5 days you have 2 tubs full of tumbled glass reminiscent of sea glass that I’ve been using on various crafts all summer. So far I’ve made a chandelier by wrapping the glass with wire and dangling it from a discounted fixture that I painted, making a candle lighted privacy screen with wrapped glass in the design, mirrors, etc. It’s really fun!
